Trip Overview

Mera Peak, at 6467m, is one of Nepal's highest permitted trekking peaks, standing in magnificent isolation, and is a good mountain for trekkers who would like a straightforward introduction to mountaineering.

Mera’s extraordinary summit towers above the densely-wooded Hinku and Hongu valleys; in fact on a clear day you will see five of the six highest mountains on Earth. Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), Everest (8848m) and Makalu (8463m) are all very close by, and, when it’s clear, you may just be able to see Kangchenjunga (8586m) on the Indian border far away to the east.  It’s a truly memorable view that you will never forget.

The British Army officer, Jimmy Roberts, the father of trekking in Nepal, and his Sherpa, Sen Tenzing were the first people to climb Mera Peak during a reconnaissance of the Hinku and Hongu valleys in 1953, just one year after the first ascent of Everest, so you are following in well-trodden footsteps during this outstanding trek.

Although physically very demanding on account of its altitude, the actual climb on Mera Peak is not technically difficult, although it requires stamina and excellent physical fitness. Our itinerary has been carefully designed to allow gradual acclimatization for the ascent, primarily through the trek through the virgin forest of the Hinku Valley. Our local lodge and camping services and experienced trekking staff are second to none, while our dedicated climbing guide will ensure that your Mera Peak trip will leave an indelible memory in your life.

Mera Peak and Hinku Valley trek is not only about reaching an impressive summit but also a fascinating combination of mountain trekking, exploration and culture. The trail leads though traditional terraced Sherpa, Rai and Tamang farming villages, and on to pristine bamboo and rhododendron jungle, while the rhododendron and blue pine forest trails of the Hinku Valley give way to dwarf juniper and then moorland with seasonal blue and white trumpet gentians.
Short, but exhilarating, mountain flights to and from Lukla will surely serve as memorable bookmarks in this chapter of challenging and fulfilling experiences in Nepal’s Solu Khumbu.
