This challenging and unique trek offers the chance to explore Nepal’s Khumbu at its very finest. Beginning in Lukla, after a breathtakingly short flight from Kathmandu, the trek follows the main trail of the region, including the old Tibetan trade route, and passes through the lush pine and rhodendron forests of Sagarmatha National Park.
Highlights of the trek include a visit to the imposing Ama Dablam Base Camp, itself a wonderful grassy site nestled below one of the Himalaya’s most iconic mountain profiles. Its charming name, Ama Dablam, refers to the two great ridges above base camp, which are like a mother (Ama) and her Charm Box pendant (Dablam), represented by the huge hanging serac high on the West Face of the mountain.
Our newly conceived and fascinating loop trek moves on from Ama Dablam in the Imja Valley, towards two more trek highlights. These are the ascents of Kalapathar (Black Rock) and Gokyo Ri (Gokyo Peak), renowned for spectacular sunrise and sunset views of the incomparable Mount Everest, which may be seen alongside Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu (all four over 8000m), as well as many 6000m and 7000m peaks beside.
After the Everest Base Camp visit, and ascent of Kala Pathar, there follows the challenge of Chola La pass with attendant enjoyment of the beauty of Gokyo Ri valley and the amazing Gokyo lakes which are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Gokyo Ri itself is the last climbing challenge of this multi-layered trek before crossing the river to Khumjung, where is to be found the very first Edmund Hillary school, which was the start of a huge and radical improvement in education for Sherpa children, back in the sixties.
Packed with strenuous effort, this trek is all about experiencing the majestic beauty of the tallest and most magnificent mountains in the world, as well as gaining an insight into the cultural life of the Sherpa people of the Khumbu, not to mention forming a link with those first, intrepid conquerors of Mount Everest.
It culminates in a return to Lukla, and a short flight back to the razzmatazz of Kathmandu.
