Trip Overview

The Langtang Region is a popular destination for climbing snow peaks and enjoying spectacular panoramic views of mountains in Nepal and Tibet. Easy road access from Kathmandu, via Syabrubesi, and the proximity of several snow peaks for acclimatization, make this region an ideal choice for both novice and experienced climbers, especially those who have limited time available. Naya Kanga (5844m), with almost-year-round accessibility, opens the door for those who have a passionate wish to begin climbing, and for those with basic climbing skills who want to improve and test their techniques. It is an attractive peak, spectacularly situated in the southern flank of the Langtang region of Nepal, towering over the alpine Langtang Valley and rising to the west of the Ganja La pass (5122m).The ascent to the summit affords stunning panoramic mountain views, including Langshisha Ri (6370m), Pemthang Ri (6836m), Shisapangma (8046m), Langtang Lirung (7425m), Pemthang Kapro Ri (6830m) and Langtang II (6571m). The normal route to Naya Kanga is to take the Langtang trek, crossing the Langtang Khola below Kyangjin (3749m) and then to follow the trail to Ganja La, and up to the eastern end of the glacier shelf, where high camp is set up for the ascent. The glacier shelf is crossed before climbing up through narrow couloirs to the base of the ridge. The ascent to the summit, via a small col on the east-west ridge, takes about 5-7 hours from high camp, and must be done carefully. Unless the remote, wilderness return route via Ganja La pass (sometimes arguably more demanding than Naya Kanga itself) is chosen, the return path is to Dunche, via Thulo Syabru. After reaching that town, and enjoying a farewell party with the trekking staff, the following morning is taken up with a bus journey back to Kathmandu.
