Typical Trekking Day

Trekking days are planned to be enjoyable - the walking is challenging, but there is always time to stand and stare. It is your holiday, and we want you to return home refreshed, not exhausted, with happy memories of a wonderful and unforgettable time in Nepal.

No two days are ever the same on trek. Availability of campsites and lodge accommodation, proximity to water supplies, trail conditions and the general pace of the group - each and all of these factors mean that exact timetables are neither possible, nor even desirable! And there may be a myriad of flowers to be examined minutely, or flocks of birds to be identified, hot sunshine to relax in, views to be marvelled at - these are essential pleasures to be experienced within your trekking days, and a route-march to ascertain arrival at your lodge or campsite 'on the dot' is definitely not part of our company philosophy. For all these, and many more, reasons, the following is merely a guide:

Somewhere between 4 and 7 hours each day will be spent walking, with some days spent in acclimatization and with rest periods. On a camping trek, the day usually begins at around 6 a.m. with the arrival of 'bed tea', and washing water at your tent flap. On a lodge trek, you may be able to take breakfast a little later. In any case, you should pack your kit bag and day sac swiftly, so that the guides can deal with them, and take down any tents on a camping trek, while you are having breakfast. Take your day sac with you to breakfast, also your camera, etc. Your kit bag will be added to one of the porter loads, with the rest of the group gear, and will be on its way while you eat. Kitbags will be inaccessible until late afternoon, so be sure to pack everything you will need until then in your day sac.

After a full breakfast, we will usually move on by about 7.30 a.m., expecting to walk for a few hours before lunch, which is before noon. This break usually lasts for over one and a half hours which gives you time to rest, as well as writing your diary, doing your laundry and so on.

Then we walk for another 2 to 3 hours to our evening stop. The afternoon walk usually finishes around 4.30 p.m. On arrival at the day's destination, refreshing drinks and biscuits will be available, after which you have free time until dinner. After dinner your guide will come to chat about your experiences of that day and talk about the next. The evenings are generally filled by chatting, reading, diary-writing, card-playing, drinking, etc. - but not usually for very long, as 'early to bed, early to rise' is the best way to get the maximum enjoyment out of trekking days.

There will be both a lead and a rear Assistant guide, so make it your business to know who they are each day. Please do not set out from any stop ahead of the lead guide and remember that, although it is not necessary to walk together as a group, except where the path is poorly defined or confusing, or there is the possibility of bad weather, it is sensible to keep at least one other trek member in sight. Never make any excursions on your own without telling your Guide. Watch out for arrows inscribed along the trail, particularly at trail junctions.

Finally, when you want to admire the view - STOP! - otherwise, you may fall flat on your face, or worse!
